I am currently replacing the fork seals and although the caps don't show any sign of cracks I am looking to replace them as a precaution ( with some I have ordered from variobob ) - and replace the seals under them.

What is the best way to remove the caps - using heat ?

I appreciate that as I am replacing the caps, brute force ("slide hammer" method mentioned in some of the posts on the subject) may be an option but if there are some tips out there that can minimise damage I would prefer to use them.

Thanks

If no crack is visible I use a hot air gun to heat up the aluminium bushing attached to the fork leg. After about 30 seconds I do get a hammer to carefully hammer it off the pipe. You can however wrap a cloth around the hammerhead if you want the paint on the fork leg to stay a in good shape. Good luck!
